Hubbard Glacier

Wednesday morning we woke to a beautiful sunny day, stunning mountains and the occasional small iceberg floating by.

We had sailed overnight toward glacier bay and the Hubbard Glacier and were now approaching. Initially it didn’t look that big, but as we came closer more and more ice flowed past and the bigger we realised it was.

The glacier is 10km across,  120km long,  and 150 meters high. Taller than our cruise ship. We eventually stopped 1km from the glacier and watch in awe. There was a constant crackle and pop, mini explosions, and then every few minutes part of the glacier would “Calve” crashing into the sea with a thunderous explosion.

We sat anchored for around an hour and just watched the show. The ice of the glacier was bright blue while the top was ragged spires. It was hard to comprehend how this all started 120km away and how much force was involved in pushing this ice down the mountain. Apparently the ice falling into the sea had taken 400 years the get here.

The time passed very quickly and we eventually had to leave. One of the most amazing sites we have ever seen. Mesmerizing.

It was lunchtime so we headed to a restaurant we had booked that was doing an Alaskan King Crab special. Yum!!King crab legs, with crab cakes and a delicious crab bisque. We were really getting the full Alaskan experience.

And there was dessert of course!

After lunch we spent the afternoon sitting up top and enjoyed the great weather and views of the mountains with a few drinks.

Before we new it was dinner and we were eating again. Bel and Shelly went to a show (70s musical) after dinner so Ed and I hit the casino.

A very late night after another great day. It was time to get some sleep and do it all again.
