Bemm River

We had a beautiful last day in Mallacoota. The weather continues to improve, as does our paddling. We managed to paddle our way around a couple of the islands in the inlet, 4km all up with some tough going in the current. We continue to work better together and zig zag less.

After lunch we started our pack up. We packed up the kitchen and other non essentials so that we only had to pack clothes and the tent in the morning. We decided the last night would be eating out and had a great meal at the pub. Oysters (at half the price of Sydney), grilled lemon sole for me, and the Hawaiian Parma special for Bel (with a free wine!). Food was awesome. We then headed back for a final camp fire before heading to bed for an early night.

Bemm River

We were up early and had a very easy pack up. I walked up and grabbed a tea and coffee and we were ready to go. It was very sad to leave “Coota”, but also nice to be starting the exploring again.

On the way to Bemm River we passed through Cann River. A very small town that was surprisingly busy. We stopped for brunch along with dozens of other caravaners. We realised that this was the first major stop on the Princes Highway since Eden. Not long after we turned off to Bemm River and arrived after about a 20km trip back towards the coast.

The town has a population of roughly 70, but is apparently a great fishing spot. Once we set up camp we went for a quick ride to check out the town. First was the lake and fishing spots, then the pub, and then the bait shop/general store. Bel bought a cap – Okuma – femme fatale! and we bought Victorian fishing licenses (forgot about that in Mallacoota 😳). The store owner was very helpful on places to fish and bait. Apparently beach worms are the way to go from shore and she recommended we come back and get them fresh in the morning.  So we are now once again relaxing and planning to head out for a fish early tomorrow. I hope Bel’s new cap does the trick.
