After leaving the beautiful Airlie Beach next stop was Townsville which is roughly half way to Cairns. Steve and I weren’t sure what to expect and were surprised how beautiful the foreshore was. It is on the Coral Sea with a huge rocky surrounds.

Within seconds of arriving at the caravan park, Rowes Beachfront Holiday Park, while Steve was parking the camper trailer an older guy felt he needed to come out twice to give Steve advice on how to park it! Of course he ignored him with a few choice words!! He was then aptly named Sticky beak because next he came to check out the smoke coming from the Webber! 😂
The park we stayed was opposite the beach with a bike track all the way to town. So the next morning we rode along it into town.

As with many of the coastal towns up here the foreshore was beautiful! It had something for everyone- sculptures, amazing kids playgrounds, great big banyan trees, places to swim and eat or just sit and look out to the Coral Sea.

First we came across an old fort called Kissing Point. It was very interesting, a bit of a museum commemorating those involved in the World Wars and particularly the Battle of the Coral Sea. It had a memorial for the American involvement in this battle. Townsville was under threat from the Japanese which Americans helped fend off. I didn’t know this!! So actually learnt something. 😊

We kept riding along the path and stopped for coffee near the huge man made rock pool. Stinger suits needed as sea water is pumped in along with stingers.

We rode further and through the Main Street of town seeing more of this pretty town. We had a pub lunch with a view.(Steve had a schnity😜) and then rode home.

Bike riding is such a great way to explore a town and exercise. We rode a bit further to get the kms up to 23. Needed to ride off lunch.
Townsville was lovely and recommend a visit.
