Back on the road!

We kicked off another tour in the van this week, with a 6 week loop planned covering Phillip Island, The Great Ocean Road, Coober Pedy, and Cameron’s Corner.

First stop was Bomaderry to catch up with an old work mate, Dave, and his dog Loui.

Setup in Dave’s front yard

We setup camp in his front yard for a couple of nights which gave us some time to get the van sorted and fill the water tanks etc.

On the second day there Dave took me out for a fish on the Crookhaven and Shoalhaven rivers. It was a really pleasant morning out on the water exploring all of Dave’s favourite spots. We caught a good variety of fish – Bream, Flathead, Taylor, Salmon and Puffers. Unfortunately they were all either too small or non edible.

We had promised Bel fish for dinner, so this meant a stop at the fish shop on the way home to get some flathead and oysters (it was a bit hard explaining how we caught those).

From Dave’s place we made our way back towards the freeway via Nerriga and Goulburn and then headed south to our next stop Glenrowan. It was a 7 hour drive all up, with a nice lunch stop at Holbrook.

The local park is famous for its Subs display, which also tells the story of how the town changed its name from Germantown to Holbrook after WWI. The park itself was then named Germantown in 1988 to reflect its historical heritage.

We made it to Glenrowan around 3.30. This is Ned Kelly country, site of his last stand.

It was only a one night stop, so we spent the afternoon looking around town. Unfortunately, being mid week, a lot of things were closed early. It also looked like the town was getting a bit of a refurbishment with lots of construction underway. It will be good to come back when it’s all done.

Ned locked up again!

We finished with an obligatory beer at the pub before heading across to the campground for an early night. We had another big drive planned the next day to reach Phillip Island.
