The drive into Cairns was dominated by fields of Sugarcane, followed by Banana and Mango trees.
Bel and I arrived early afternoon after another 350km drive – the distances between major towns are really starting to stretch again. After setting up we did a quick drive around town, had a kebab as late lunch, bought some supplies, and then headed back to camp.
And..It’s getting sooooo humid!! I think it’s ratcheted up a bit faster than we expected – 30 degrees still and humid, and almost winter!
The next day we were up early to drop the car off for a final checkup before hitting the outback. We took the bikes and rode into town from Toyota.
Once again there are great cycleways everywhere – well done Qld. After stopping for breakfast (Bel reckons it was the best yet) we explored the esplanade and parks for about 20km before deciding it was time for a swim in the public pool…..
And it’s an amazing space. An infinity pool on the main street of Cairns looking out to the reef and islands.
After swimming and sunning for an hour or so we had prawns and barramundi for lunch before riding back to the caravan park to do some chores (washing) and another swim (it’s hot!).
The next morning I rode over to pick up the car and then picked up Bel to do some supplies shopping. We turned on the freezer in the car and bought 30 days worth of meat! Hopefully the freezer/battery won’t let us down!
We were all set by midday for the big trip north so we decided to do the “must do” Kuranda Skyrail for the remainder of the day.
It’s a great way to see the rainforest and Barron Falls as you glide over the canopy in a gondola.
We cruised up the mountain with great views over Cairns before descending over the Rainforest and across Barron Falls.
There were two stops with walkways as you went up..
Until we finally reached Kuranda, a very laid back touristy village with artisan markets and a strong indigenous influence.
After an ice cream (did I mention how hot it is?) and a walk through town we headed back to town on the Skyrail.
A great experience and a great way to end our time in Cairns.
