Crescent Head

Bel and I spent the last two weeks holidaying with our friends in Crescent Head. It’s an annual pilgrimage that we have been making with the same group of families for about 13 years.

The first week we were mostly on our own until the other families started arriving from Thursday. On Monday Carolyn stopped into visit

and then on Wednesday Aleesha arrived for a few days to camp with us – yay!!

Cresso is a beautiful beachside town with a caravan/camping ground at its heart. With a population of around a 1000, it’s the camping ground that drives the economy for the local club, pub, bottle-o, bakery, coffee shop, surf shop, and golf course – all within 5min walk.

The area is most famous for its surf break which is now an international surfing reserve,

but for us it’s actually Killick Creek that is the main attraction as it winds its way into the surf. A beautiful spot to swim, float, paddle, and fish, or just sit beside with an afternoon drink. And we did all of the above.

I managed to catch my first fish out of the kayak, a nice flatty, only to see it jump out of the kayak before I could skewer it – need a net! I had to release a few other undersize bream as well, so I’m still not eating fish for dinner  – the other blokes had a bit more luck (skill) and caught some good bream and whiting.

There is also a lot to do in the areas surrounding Cresso with beautiful beaches along the back road to Port Macquarie. Racecourse, Delicate Nobby, and then Point Plomber are all great spots and make a enjoyable ride.

The road is gravel until Plomber before turning into a sandy and rough 4wd track through to Port Macquarie – so we decided to form a convoy and give the track a go as we headed to Port for lunch. A great fun track that was thankfully quite dry as some of the holes would be over the bonnet. We all made it safely with only a few scrapes and then caught the Punt across the Hastings river before enjoying a nice lunch.

The week went very quickly, with something happening every day – lots of walks and swimming by the beach or creek, usually followed by tentertaining before either dinner at home or at the club to watch a game.

The second last evening was a big night at the club, with a game, dinner, some pool, and even had Leesh and Bel up for some Karaoke!

Another fantastic holiday away with great friends. Was so very hard to say goodbye – but it’s time to get back on the road and head north for the winter!
