Whales!!

Well not quite… We got up early for the whale watching and rode our bikes over to the Marina. We were excited because there had been lots of whales around on their southern migration.

It was freezing with really strong southerly winds. When we arrived and the operator warned us that it was going to be rough, “make sure you take your tablets!”  What tablets we ask?? Thankfully a lovely elderly couple offered us some Kwell and all is good, we’re feeling confident.

Once on the boat, the captain once again warned us it was going to be VERY rough, and offered that this was our last chance to get off… We are now feeling a little less confident!

Once we were out into the bay and heading towards the heads I understood what they were talking about – the seas were huge. White caps everywhere, and often higher than the boat when we were in a trough. Very hard to take pictures that give perspective but Bel took a few.

We then set about looking for whales without luck. After about 2 hours of searching we hadn’t seen any, but we did get to see a dolphin pod and some fur seals.

The crew were very apologetic, and said there were normally 40-60 whales every time they went out this time of year, wtf – maybe the Adams were whalers and they saw us coming!!

So we made the journey back to port, but this time it was against the wind, which proved to be too much for a few. Three people ended up rushing to the side of the boat and throwing up. I’d felt great until then, but it’s funny how it gets into your head. Fortunately we made it back to shore with full stomachs, but no whales🐳🐳🐳🐋🐋🐳

The company that operates the tour provides a guarantee, so we now have vouchers that expire in 2 years (there were two groups that were on the boat using their vouchers – poor buggers).

We spent the afternoon cleaning, washing,  and warming up. We also bought some new beanies (on special!).
