The last two days have been beautiful, clear blue skies and warm, although it did cloud over a little this afternoon. It’s apparently going to continue to get warmer according to the local forecaster/woodman/iceman.
We went for a paddle yesterday morning and covered about 4km.
We paddled from our camp site up the inlet to the beach and river mouth. It was beautiful. Once we reached the beach we went for a walk along the beach, very remote – Bel even found an ashtray (abalone shell we think?).
On our way back to the boat we met another couple of paddlers who said there was a fur seal at the wharf, so we headed back up to the inlet to the wharf and found him – his name is “Levi” and we were told he has been coming here for years waiting for the scraps from the fisherman. He has obviously been successful because he is huge! I have some footage from the gopro but learnt a valuable lesson regarding wiping the camera down regularly; all pictures are looking through a big sandy smudge 🙁 Hopefully we will see him again tomorrow.
We spent the afternoon buying supplies and relaxing. We had a sausage sizzle for lunch and used the left over sausages to make curried sausages (with mash and peas). Yumm!
The sky was amazing as the moon came up; it was blood red; I think there was an eclipse going on?
We finished the day with marshmallows on the campfire.
Today we started with a walk up to town for breakfast and a coffee. I had the big brekky and Bel had bacon and eggs. When they say big they mean big. It was huge. We both think it’s the best we have had so far.
We had planned to go for another paddle today and fish around the other side of the island, but the weather closed in at around midday and a cold wind came in. Instead I spent the afternoon fishing off the little jetty while Bel read her book.
After 20 minutes of spinning I had two tangles (tips anyone?) so decided to go for a bike ride instead. I went back out to the single track Bel and I found the day before and followed it til the end. It was roughly 8km each way and very flowy – lots of fun. At the end of the trail there was a sign post saying that I was at the convergence of the Pacific Ocean, Southern Ocean, and Tasman Sea.
Once back at camp we cleaned up and prepped for the night; chopping wood for the fire and getting dinner ready. We also ended up teaching some young kids next to us how to chop wood and light a fire – they’re happy campers now too! Roast pork and veggies for dinner tonight!
